More than a dozen hunting dogs were tracking the scent of the Demon Hunter.
Behind them was a large group of Witch Hunters, at least eighty or ninety people. The Eternal Flame Church had almost gathered all the Witch Hunters they could find nearby.
Following the Witch Hunters were some fully armed Church Knights. They had difficulty moving with their warhorses because the dense forest was inconvenient for movement. Moreover, many were wearing full-body armor. If they stepped into a waterlogged area, their entire foot would sink into the mud.
They cursed as they moved forward, their speed far slower than the Witch Hunters, who were only equipped with light armor.
More people could be seen arriving from afar, some on horseback, intending to circle around and cut off the Demon Hunter's escape route.
This assassination attempt had aroused the Eternal Flame Church like an enraged tiger. They were usually the ones hunting Witches and Demon Hunters; when had they ever been caught off guard by them?
The battle in Lund had just ended not long ago, and now the Demon Hunters had set Kolon ablaze.
The high ranks of the Eternal Flame Church were furious, planning to pin these Demon Hunters on the plinth of the Divine Hall to uphold the Church's dignity.
The night provided some cover.
But given the sheer number of pursuers, it was only a matter of time before the Witch Hunters would find their trail.
Under a lush old tree.
Van Helsing sat down, breathing heavily, his expression pained. He whispered, "I can't hold on much longer. You all go ahead. Cross that mountain from here, head south; Freya's Priestess will help you."
The hook-nosed man squatting beside him said nothing, only undid his bandaged wound and poured some pale red powder into it. There were marks from a crossbow arrow; most of the Demon Hunters killed in this action had been shot dead by crossbow arrows. The Raven School had a preference for heavy armor, and Van Helsing was somewhat lucky not to have his lungs pierced by the arrow.
"Stop the nonsense." The brawny man with the Wolf Head Badge on his shoulder picked up Van Helsing, and said solemnly, "Head to that valley."
"We need to give them a little taste of their own medicine."
In the distance, the barking of the hounds could already be heard; a group of Witch Hunters was closing in fast.
About ten minutes later.
Two groups of Witch Hunters appeared nearby. They looked at the footprints left on the ground and said solemnly, "Two people here are heavily injured. They went that way."
"Quick, after them!"
Over twenty Witch Hunters rapidly advanced, followed by a large mass of firelight as the Church Knights abandoned their horses and proceeded on foot, quickly closing in.
A small valley appeared before them.
The Witch Hunters looked at the chaotic footprints on the ground and said excitedly, "Right ahead, they're trying to get up the mountain!"
The Eternal Flame Church had offered an extremely high bounty.
In addition to these Witch Hunters, some Bounty Hunters were also tracking Van Helsing's group, but their information was a bit slow, and they could only try to find ways to block their retreat.
Crack.
At that moment, a clear sound of glass breaking suddenly echoed.
In an instant!
A layer of piercing frost erupted on the ground and quickly spread, enveloping all the Witch Hunters in the blink of an eye, freezing them in place like human ice sculptures.
Crack, crack.
A series of continuous cracking sounds erupted; these twenty-some Witch Hunters shattered like fragmented ice sculptures, turning into chunks of frozen flesh and blood.
"Where did you find such power?" the Griffin School Demon Hunter murmured.
The old Viper panted and said with difficulty, "It's the last bit of inheritance from the Viper School. This was the final bottle."
"Watch out!"
"More are catching up."
Outside the valley, a dozen hunting dogs halted, whimpering incessantly, refusing to advance no matter how they were urged.
They seemed to fear something!
The Witch Hunters exchanged glances and drew their weapons, advancing vigilantly. When they saw what lay ahead, many drew sharp breaths because what appeared before them was a ground strewn with fragments of ice-frozen flesh, without a single living soul in sight, not even a complete human silhouette.
"Be alert! They're still nearby,"
the Witch Hunter who seemed like the leader said. "Go inform those Church Knights to come over! These folks are troublesome!"
"They're here!" a shout came.
Immediately followed by the sounds of swords being drawn, some Witch Hunters began loading their crossbows. Not far away, more shouting was heard as the Church Knight Order rapidly approached.
"Prepare for battle."
The brawny man with the Wolf Head Badge bowed and kissed his sword blade, his gaze gradually growing determined. He said gravely, "It's an honor to fight alongside you all!"
With that, he charged headlong toward the Witch Hunters.
A vicious and bloody battle erupted instantly on the uphill path. The Demon Hunters chose their position cleverly, allowing them to use the rocks for cover from shooting. But they were too few, greatly outnumbered by the enemy, and Church Knights were closing in from afar.
Cough, cough.
Lev swung his Two-Handed Sword, slicing off a Witch Hunter's head before coughing up some blood. He yanked the crossbow arrow from his chest; the massive figure, resembling a brown bear, had been hit by at least seven or eight arrows. If it wasn't for the Bear School's impressive physique and the sturdy armor, he might have already fallen.
"No need to keep any of them alive!" a cold male voice echoed from afar.
In the short skirmish, the Witch Hunters had suffered significant casualties, and almost every Demon Hunter was wounded. Without their wealth of combat experience, they might have already fallen.
As that voice faded, the Witch Hunters at the front began to retreat, some pulling out strange bottles and jars.
"Be careful! It's Alchemy Fire Oil!" the old Viper shouted.
Boom.
The leading Wolf School Demon Hunter blocking the path was instantly engulfed in explosive flames; Lev's burly form was sent flying, sprawled on the ground, coughing up blood. The Alchemy Fire Oil crafted by the Eternal Flame Church was extremely potent, far more powerful than what the Demon Hunters could make.
The Witch Hunters and Church Knights surged forward once more.
The surviving Demon Hunters gritted their teeth and stood up, weapons in hand, ready to face their final battle.
But just at that moment.
Bang!
Suddenly, a dull gunshot rang out, and the next second, the entire body of the Church Knight giving orders seemed to explode, torn asunder.
A spray of blood and limbs rain down.
In the sky, streaks of fire appeared, accompanied by the roaring wind, as fireballs descended from heaven!
