The Rise of Quetzalcoatl

Chapter 755: Progression in Interdimensional Travel (29)

Ethel gritted her teeth as she clung to the edge of a shattered barricade. "What the hell is that thing?!" she shouted over the cacophony.

Lucy's eyes were fixed on the creature, her face grim. "It's this dimension's final warning. We've pushed too far, and it's decided to push back."

The anomaly raised one of its massive legs, slamming it down into the ground. A shockwave radiated outward, rupturing the earth and sending fissures snaking toward the defenders. Lucy grabbed Ethel's arm, pulling her to safety as a jagged crack opened beneath their feet.

The battle lines were in chaos, but Lucy's voice barked through the comms. "Heavy units, target the legs! Keep it off balance! Aerial units engage those wings—we can't let it take to the skies!"

The soldiers rallied, their efforts becoming more coordinated. Streams of energy fire concentrated on the anomaly's Skrelch legs, aiming for the joints. A squad of jetpack soldiers launched upward, weaving through the fiery winds created by its wings. They deployed cryo-grenades, aiming to extinguish the ghostly flames and weaken the wings' structural integrity.

Meanwhile, snipers targeted the crystalline protrusions on its back, aiming for the cores glowing faintly within. Each successful shot sent a small pulse of energy cascading through the creature, causing it to stagger briefly.

Lucy looked back at the soldiers and then at Ethel, a faint smile tugging at her lips despite the chaos. "They've got this," she said, her voice steady. "We've trained for this moment. It's not just a monster—it's a problem we're going to solve."

The anomaly roared, its voice a guttural mix of all the sounds of its lesser counterparts. As it drew closer, its warped features became clearer, and its presence loomed larger than ever. The battlefield was poised for a clash of epic proportions, and the defenders stood ready, determination etched into their every movement.

As the apex anomaly approached, even more powerful variants of the monsters emerged to pave the way.

The Titan Crushers were now quadruple their original size, their crystalline armor glowing white-hot. Each step left molten craters, and they wielded massive crystalline clubs fused to their forelimbs. One swung its club in a devastating arc, sending a squad scattering.

A soldier with an energy lance dodged the swing by sliding under it, thrusting the weapon into the Titan's exposed knee joint. Another soldier fired a grappling hook onto the Titan's back, climbing up and planting an explosive charge in one of its crystalline spikes. As the charge detonated, shrapnel exploded outward, staggering the Titan. A mage then summoned a massive rock column from beneath the creature, using the momentum to impale its glowing thorax.

These new variants were nearly impossible to track. They phased so rapidly that even enhanced vision couldn't follow their movements. Their keening howls were now localized bursts of psychic energy, shattering barriers and disorienting soldiers.

A Phantom appeared behind a group, its tail lashing out with a whip of crackling energy. A soldier deflected it with his shield, but the force sent him skidding backward. A mage cast a wide-area disruption spell, forcing the creature to materialize fully. As it flickered into existence, another soldier fired a precision railgun shot that pierced its core.

The Wyrms now radiated so much heat that the air around them shimmered. Their magma-like venom splattered across the battlefield, creating molten pools that forced the soldiers to constantly reposition.

One Scorcher reared up, spewing a column of molten venom toward a squad. A soldier activated his jetpack, dodging upward and firing cryo-grenades into the creature's open mouth. The grenades detonated, causing steam to erupt as the Wyrm's internal temperature plummeted. Another soldier dashed in, her plasma blade cutting through its now-brittle horns, decapitating the beast.

The Reapers returned with flaming tendrils trailing from their wings, each tendril acting like a searing whip. They dove in coordinated formations, their screeches disorienting the aerial soldiers.

One jetpack soldier juked left, narrowly avoiding a tendril that burned a scar across his armor. Twisting midair, he fired a series of EMP grenades that disabled a cluster of Reapers, sending them plummeting. A mage cast a gravity well spell, pulling the fallen creatures into one location, where explosive drones finished them off.

As the apex anomaly advanced, it began to actively manipulate the battlefield. Its circular mouth emitted a psychic howl that split the air, causing soldiers to collapse clutching their heads. Those standing quickly activated psychic dampeners, allowing them to recover and regroup.

The anomaly raised one of its massive legs, driving it into the ground. A shockwave of energy erupted outward, toppling barricades and scattering the defenders. Lucy growled and grabbed Ethel's arm. "We're not retreating yet. This isn't just a monster—it's a challenge. Let's show it what we've got!"

Lucy coordinated a counterattack. Engineers deployed mobile barricades reinforced with energy fields to create safe zones. Heavy gunners aimed at the creature's Skrelch legs, focusing fire to disable its movement. Jetpack soldiers and drones swarmed its fiery wings, firing cryo-rounds to extinguish the flames and weaken their structural integrity. Mages conjured massive elemental spells, combining fire and ice to strike the anomaly's weak points. One mage summoned a storm of lightning bolts, each one targeting the creature's exposed crystalline spikes. Snipers focused on its glowing eyes, aiming to disrupt its vision and psychic howl capabilities.

The apex anomaly roared in a fury, its movements becoming more erratic as the coordinated assault began to take effect. But its retaliation would prove to be even more devastating. The battle was far from over.

The battle against the colossal amalgam and the relentless wave of variants unfolded with unyielding ferocity, a spectacle of chaos and desperate ingenuity. Soldiers and mages fought in synchrony, their movements a blend of grit, discipline, and improvisation.

Emerging alongside the boss monster were larger, darker Skrelch Titans, their exoskeletons reinforced with obsidian-like plating that deflected most small-arms fire. Their mandibles crackled with bioelectricity that arced dangerously toward nearby soldiers. These Titans had an added ability: discharging bolts of electricity in unpredictable bursts.

One Titan charged, its spiked legs churning through the ground, aiming for a fortified turret. The soldiers manning the turret fired relentlessly, their energy rounds barely denting its thick armor. As it closed in, a grenadier slid under its body, attaching adhesive explosives to its underbelly. The grenadier rolled clear just in time, the explosion ripping through the vulnerable plating beneath the Titan, sending it collapsing in a sparking heap.

Another Titan fired an electric burst toward a squad advancing with a portable energy shield. The squad leader immediately redirected power from their weapons to fortify the shield, absorbing the brunt of the blast. Meanwhile, a mage conjured chains of lightning, wrapping them around the Titan's legs to immobilize it. A team of gunners took the opening, concentrating their fire on its glowing thorax until it shattered in a brilliant cascade of sparks.

These Specters now flickered between dimensions, their forms disorienting and fractured, making it impossible to predict their movements. Their psychic howls became more piercing, capable of temporarily incapacitating multiple soldiers.

One Specter phased directly into the path of a mage, its barbed tail whipping toward her. She dodged, twisting her body and countering with a sphere of light that disrupted the Specter's phasing ability. The creature reeled, but another appeared behind her. Before it could strike, a soldier leapt in, slamming it to the ground with an electrified gauntlet and pinning it until the mage dispatched it with a fiery blast.

A squad developed a quick countermeasure: deploying motion sensors tuned to the Specters' unique energy signature. With the creatures' movements tracked, soldiers used synchronized fire to trap and annihilate them before they could phase again.

These Scorchers burned with an intensity that turned the battlefield into a molten wasteland. Their acidic liquid had become a stream of lava-like venom that carved through barriers and melted armor.

One Scorcher reared back, spewing its molten venom toward a line of advancing soldiers. A support unit activated a wind barrier, redirecting the deadly stream to harmlessly splash against a rock face. The Wyrm lunged forward, its horn crackling with energy. A soldier armed with a plasma hammer intercepted it, swinging the weapon upward to deflect the attack and following through with a downward strike that shattered the creature's molten skull.

A second Scorcher lashed its tail toward a sniper's perch. The sniper leapt from the ledge, firing midair at the Wyrm's exposed underbelly. A pair of soldiers capitalized on the opening, blasting its torso with synchronized fire until it collapsed.

These variants had larger wingspans and emitted shrill, paralyzing screams that affected even those wearing sound-dampening gear. Their acid talons now dripped a glowing green substance that corroded everything it touched.

A Reaper Alpha dive-bombed a cluster of soldiers, its talons cutting through their cover. One soldier barely dodged, rolling aside and firing a grappling hook that caught the creature's wing. With a sharp tug, he pulled it into a waiting energy net deployed by his squadmates. The trapped Reaper thrashed wildly, but a mage stepped forward, conjuring a vortex of flames that incinerated it mid-air.
