Korean Mercenary’s Wild West

chapter 1 - Prologue

Fwoooooosh.A rough sandstorm swept the wasteland. In the mirage rising off the earth’s heat,a single horse was ambling toward the town.Clop, clop, clop.Neeeiigh.“Whoa, whoa.”An uprooted tumbleweed rolling like a ball of yarn set the horse on edge. The man who calmed it by taking the reins tipped up, just slightly, the ten-gallon hat cowboys wore.Sharp, monolid eyes, dark irises. The gaze of an East Asian—ill-matched to this place—raked over the town.It was a ◆ Nоvеlіgһt ◆ (Only on Nоvеlіgһt) small town with only a handful of buildings to its name.Clack.Rrrrrr.A blood wind was about to hit. Feeling the omen of battle coiling around the town, the people hurriedly shut their doors.Someone slipped into the saloon to announce the East Asian’s arrival.“Ma—Max Jo is here!”“Hm…”Tom Bell—who had made a gang named after himself—let out a deep hum and rose.“We’ll finish the drink when I get back.”The bartender swallowed and nodded.Leaving the whiskey where it was, Tom Bell stepped out of the saloon, and his men followed.Creak, creak. The oil-starved swing doors squeaked as they rocked, and outside, Tom Bell flicked his eyes around.A few underlings were taking aim at the bastard from behind a wagon and from a rooftop.‘I’ll fill him with lead from head to toe.’Tom Bell cocked up one corner of his mouth.Narrowing his eyes, he stared at the East Asian riding in—Max Jo.Clop, clop.Neigh.The horse stopped, and Max Jo stepped down.Behind the unhurried movements, a razor gaze cut toward Tom Bell. The ends of Tom Bell’s mustache twitched.Sneering at black-haired Max Jo, he said,“Coming alone—guess you’re a man after all. I figured you’d run.”The distance between them was roughly twenty meters.Wiggling the right hand hovering over his holster, Tom Bell raised his voice.“Today, I finish avenging my brother!”Max Jo let out a thin, derisive snort.Tom Bell’s eyes turned feral as he ground his molars.“I’ll kill not just you but every last Chinaman!”Even at the madness-laced bellow, Max Jo looked bored.“Here we go again. I’m from Daehan… no, Joseon, punk.”“Bullshit! I’ll kill you right now and then wipe out every Chinaman in California—”Before Tom Bell even finished,Max Jo’s hand flashed. He drew, thumbed back the revolver’s hammer, and cocked—in the span of a heartbeat.Bang!A fast draw followed by fanning.Thud.Tom Bell and his men toppled like rotten bundles of straw.“The sp…eed…”Insane.Tom Bell’s body twitched and then went still. But the fight wasn’t over.BAAANG! Bang! Bang!Gunfire cracked from all directions, and screams burst from men pitching off the building behind the wagon.A moment later—“Phewwww.”Max Jo blew the smoke off the muzzle.Whoosh—he slid the gun into the waistband at his hip, his poncho flaring, and sauntered off at an easy pace.Around him, Max Jo’s comrades began to gather one by one. When the gunshots died, the townsfolk eased their windows open.Bodies lay scattered everywhere. And they picked out figures standing with the sunset at their backs.“Seven Strong!”Then why were there eight? While the townspeople puzzled it out,the leader—and the only East Asian—Max Jo glanced to the side.“The number’s off. Kid, fall back.”“Shi—…”The youngest stuck out his lower lip and backed away.‘Now the picture finally looked right.’The Wild West. The Gold Rush.Cowboys.And outlaws. This was the romance-soaked chaos of the lawless West.Texas, United States of America, in the mid-19th century.
