The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 171: Mid-Autumn Special (Part 1)

Even the land gods and mountain gods were unclear about just how many demons there were in the Western Continent.

Sun Wukong originally estimated that there might be a few hundred thousand, but even this estimate turned out to be conservative—within just half a year, four great demon saints from various places had already sent over two hundred thousand lesser demons.

Plus the humans who had moved from the Guan River Mouth and some other scattered places, the population increase quickly exceeded two hundred and fifty thousand.

This number far exceeded expectations.

"Brother."

Ao Luan found Sun Wukong and explained the situation: "We can't take in any more people this year."

"I know."

Sun Wukong was both happy and helpless.

He was pleased that there were so many demons in the Western Continent, but the more immigrant demons there were, the more difficult it became to manage, as they were not as compliant as humans.

Two hundred and fifty thousand humans are manageable, but two hundred and fifty thousand demons are a big problem.

This forced Sun Wukong to deploy a large number of people to educate them, setting up specialized schools for the demons to learn about Wanling City and choose the jobs they were interested in.

Those who liked using force could go protect their home.

Those who wanted to work hard and sincerely could learn farming from humans.

Those with a sharp mind could learn to run small businesses.

Those interested in a particular skill could become apprentices.

In short, Sun Wukong used all possible means to guide and educate them.

But two hundred and fifty thousand was already the limit.

The rapid increase in population had to match the food supply and city development, and too fast a growth rate would affect the stability of Wanling City.

Every year, the new streets and houses built in Wanling City were planned in advance.

This year with excess newcomers, many demons had nowhere to live, so temporary cave dwellings had to be settled for now.

"This year we can't increase the population anymore!"

Sun Wukong called the four demon saints back and halted the increase of demons.

There were simply too many new demons, and only the first batch were personally "received" by Sun Wukong when they first arrived.

For the later demons, Sun Wukong left them to the Great Emperor of True Martial.

The Great Emperor used harsh methods to control the demons, but those accustomed to living freely naturally could not contain their nature.

After a period of calm, some lesser demons found opportunities and began to cause disturbances in the city.

Though none were serious, they had a significant impact on the social climate.

"These new demons are wild and untamed!"

Ao Luan found Sun Wukong, "Brother, we need to give them another lesson."

Sun Wukong had no choice but to use some terrifying spells to deter the demons.

After the successive actions of the Great Emperor of True Martial and Sun Wukong, the demons grew fearful, and those causing trouble soon decreased, but the number of demons escaping increased.

To govern a nation, one must have both the hard and the soft hand.

At the time of the autumn equinox, Sun Wukong suddenly had an idea and decreed a citywide banquet to share in the grand celebration of the clear skies.

That night, the sky of Wanling City was filled with lanterns, the streets were full of revelry, and the extravagant festivity was like a paradise on earth.

"The Great Saint really has skills."

A Leopard Demon stuffed food into its mouth while speaking unclearly: "But if he thinks he can buy us off, it won't be that easy."

"Right, right!"

Other demons nodded in agreement.

"Although there's food and clothing here, the control is too strict; it's really uncomfortable, and the outside world is much better."

A large-eyed pheasant chimed in.

It used to like to snatch colorful feathers from other demons to decorate its own body.

But now in Wanling City, the large-eyed pheasant lost its freedom and couldn't dress up beautifully anymore.

"If I can't be pretty, what's the point of being a demon?"

The large-eyed pheasant thought to itself.

It had already made up its mind, before Sun Wukong could use his feather-plucking spell, it must leave Wanling City.

That feather-plucking spell was just too terrible!

Meanwhile, at the Wanling Hall, Sun Wukong was hosting a banquet at the Observatory, inviting all the immortals.

Water Moon Fairy was the last to arrive.

"Fairy, please sit here!"

Ann Chingning had prepared a separate table for Water Moon Fairy.

Water Moon Fairy shook her head and walked towards the seating area for the female immortals.

Daji yielded a spot for her to sit down.

Sun Wukong noticed this scene: "The Fairy needs to be attended to."

Tranquil and Serene immediately arranged for two Immortal Officials to carry a pile of sumptuous food over.

Water Moon Fairy glanced at Sun Wukong and smiled slightly.

She was no longer worried about overeating.

The Immortals sat on the Observatory, enjoying the moon while toasting and chatting merrily.

The Immortal of Colossal Spirit, with a jug of wine, found the Sun Day Star Official.

The Big Rooster sat at the end, attending the banquet of Wanling City for the first time and felt somewhat out of place, casting a glance at Sun Wukong.

"Great Saint hasn't spoken yet!"

"There are not so many rules here."

The Immortal of Colossal Spirit poured him wine, laughing: "Aside from official business hours, everyone is quite informal."

The Big Rooster looked at Sun Wukong and indeed saw him chatting with the Immortals in a very casual manner.

"Great Saint may not be talkative, but he has deep affections and likes to mingle with everyone; that's his charm."

The Big Rooster thought to himself and immediately ceased his refusal.

After several cups of wine, Water Virtues Star Monarch suddenly proposed: "Great Saint, as we drink wine and admire the moon tonight, and with the Fairy Chang'e among us, how can we not have a dance and song to heighten the enjoyment?"

"I've already made arrangements."

Sun Wukong nodded, and called out: "Daji."

"Yes."

Daji immediately stood up: "Great King, shall I sing?"

"Um."

Sun Wukong nodded.

The Fairies Chang'e then stood up as well.

"What is this about?"

Someone asked.

"Great King has found a piece from the human realm."

Lady Rakshasa said: "Miss Daji has been practicing for a long time and plans to offer it with notes to the people of the city."

"Let's begin."

Sun Wukong waved his hand casually.

In an instant, an invisible surge of energy swept through the Observatory like a wave and over Wanling City, instantly extinguishing all the city's lights.

"What's going on?"

There was chaos in Wanling City.

"What happened?"

The Demons indulging in food and drink were all somewhat confused.

Although they had agreed to leave this place after the banquet tonight, none of them mentioned extinguishing the lights beforehand.

"Who did this?"

The Demons asked each other, all with perplexed faces.

No Demon had such ability.

"What kind of Spell is this?"

At the Observatory, the Immortals were also looking at Sun Wukong in surprise.

That casual wave of his hand was not wind, but a Divine Skill that no one had ever heard of.

The lanterns of Wanling City were still floating in midair, evidently, their Runes hadn't been destroyed, but the lights were out.

"Junior brother, what technique did you use?"

Immortal Zhenyuan asked.

"No technique."

Sun Wukong replied, his casual gesture did not have a name for a maneuver.

"Let's begin."

Sun Wukong said to the Fairies.

The Fairies immediately beamed with smiles and floated out of the Observatory like ethereal immortals.

Five-colored auspicious clouds appeared above Wanling City, and the Fairies flew up one after another.

Daji did not join them, but Tranquil and Serene placed a huge musical note beside her.

Daji parted her vermilion lips and showed her pearly teeth: "Then I'll begin."
