The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 105: Being So Picky

In the Heavenly Palace, the Inspector Spirit Official serves as the eyes and ears of the Jade Emperor.

"Your Majesty."

Early that day, the Inspector Spirit Official reported to the Jade Emperor: "The Great Saint of Virtue has failed to appreciate your intentions and has been visiting various Immortal Officials."

The Jade Emperor couldn't help frowning; Sun Wukong's initiative was just too strong.

"Your Majesty."

The Inspector Spirit Official bowed and said: "I can go and stop him."

"…No, there's no need to stop him."

The Jade Emperor said coldly: "Let him do as he pleases, what can he possibly accomplish in just over ten days?"

As long as Sun Wukong did not cause trouble in the Mortal World, with him in the Heavenly Palace, the Jade Emperor wasn't worried that he would stir up any commotion.

Sun Wukong wanted to cultivate relationships with Immortals to reduce obstacles when doing things in the Mortal World, but his overenthusiasm instead convinced other Immortals that he harbored ulterior motives.

Since the beginning of Hongmeng, of the Immortals who set foot in the Heavenly Palace, which one didn't spend a year, or half, before gradually being accepted by the collective of Heavenly Immortals?

"Inspector Spirit Official, has anyone violated the Heavenly Rules recently?"

The Jade Emperor turned his attention to other matters.

Returning to Sun Wukong, his efforts to visit the Two Pure Ones had yielded little fruits, so he went to visit some ordinary Immortals.

By the end of the day, when Sun Wukong returned to Virtue Palace, his face already showed some signs of inebriation.

"Star Monarch."

Sun Wukong asked the Big Dipper Star Monarch who accompanied him back: "Why does it also get dark in the Heavenly Palace?"

"What you do not know is this,"

The Big Dipper Star Monarch said with a smile: "Originally, the Heavenly Palace had no distinction between day and night; it was only because the Jade Emperor needed it that it was evolved."

"I see."

Sun Wukong contemplated for a moment.

Was the Heavenly Palace present since the creation of Hongmeng, or was it created by Immortals?

He returned to Virtue Palace.

"Thank you, Star Monarch, you may return now!"

Sun Wukong bowed to the Big Dipper Star Monarch, who smiled and departed.

"Great Saint."

The two departments for ensuring peace and tranquility invited Sun Wukong back to the palace, brought him Hangover Medicine, and served it to him.

"Where did the Great Saint go today?"

"Nowhere in particular."

Sun Wukong replied: "I visited the Five Directions Generals, the Twenty-Eight Constellations, and some minor immortals…"

The number of visits Sun Wukong made left the two officials secretly astonished.

No wonder the Great Saint was tipsy; it turned out he had been to many places in a single day.

"How did the Immortals receive you?"

The peace official asked.

"Much better than the Two Pure Ones."

Sun Wukong answered.

His deeds had already spread throughout the Heavenly Palace; some Immortals looked down on him, thinking that all he did in the Mortal World was 'mere tricks' and not worthy of the title 'Great Saint of Virtue.'

But there were also some Immortals who recognized Sun Wukong's prowess and therefore did not dare to treat him with disrespect.

Throughout the day, Sun Wukong had met numerous Immortals.

He had made many acquaintances, but few he truly connected with, leaving him somewhat unsatisfied.

"Put these away."

Sun Wukong waved his hand, and several bags flew out of his sleeves, landing on the ground.

"What are these?"

The peace official asked.

"Gifts."

Sun Wukong responded: "They are from some Immortals I got along with."

The peace and tranquility officials opened the bags and checked the gifts, only to find the names of more than a dozen Immortal Officials.

The two officials exchanged glances, somewhat startled; the Great Saint was indeed no ordinary person.

In just one day's time, he had already received gifts from over a dozen Immortal Officials.

"I've been drinking all day and haven't eaten much; find me some pastries."

Sun Wukong said to the two officials.

The officials did not dare to neglect him and promptly ordered fairies to bring Osmanthus cake.

Sun Wukong, while filling his stomach, began to ponder.

Today, he had met a lot of Immortals, but the pace was too slow; without three or four months, he could not comfortably return to Huaguo Mountain.

Three to four months in the Heavenly Palace would be over a hundred years in the Mortal World.

Sun Wukong couldn't wait that long.

"I need to find a breakthrough."

He thought to himself.

Sun Wukong enjoyed the Osmanthus cakes, which were soft and crispy in his mouth.

"Tasty as it is, its appearance leaves much to be desired…"

Sun Wukong thought as he looked at a piece of Osmanthus cake.

The ingredients used in this cake were extremely precious, so much so that one could feel the overflowing Spiritual Energy just by holding it—a rarity in the Mortal World.

But in terms of appearance, it fell short compared to the ones from Huaguo Mountain.

Perhaps it was because Sun Wukong was accustomed to the various shapes of Osmanthus cakes at Huaguo Mountain that he found the Heavenly Palace's version plain.

An idea struck Sun Wukong.

"Right…"

Immortals might not fancy the spiritual objects of Huaguo Mountain, but they would surely like its delicacies.

The delicacies of Huaguo Mountain may not be as tasty as those in the Heavenly Palace, but they excel in novelty and variety, something the Immortals would definitely be willing to try.

"I can start from here!"

With that thought, Sun Wukong quickly finished the remaining cakes, leaped over the table, and headed outside.

"Great Saint, the sky is already dark; where are you headed?"

The tranquility officials followed him.

"I am going to Huaguo Mountain to fetch some food."

Sun Wukong waved his hand: "You don't need to follow me; I'll be back soon."

He mounted his Auspicious Cloud and flew towards the South Heavenly Gate below the Thirty-three Heavens.

Tongming Hall.

After wrapping up a day's work, the Jade Emperor suddenly thought of Sun Wukong.

"Gold Star Taibai."

He called for Gold Star Taibai and said, "You go and summon Sun Wukong for me. I'd like him to join me in a game of chess."

Gold Star Taibai was startled.

"Your Majesty," he asked, "didn't you say he was not good at chess?"

"It's true that his chess skills are poor."

The Jade Emperor nodded, "Poor indeed, but I enjoy it."

Sun Wukong had always shown himself to be capable and skillful as if there was nothing he couldn't do.

But his terribly lousy chess skills were something the Jade Emperor took pleasure in when playing chess with him.

"Don't worry about how good his chess is, just go and call him for me."

The Jade Emperor sent Gold Star Taibai on his way.

Gold Star Taibai rushed to Virtue Palace, then back to Tongming Hall.

"Your Majesty, he has gone to the Mortal World."

Gold Star Taibai reported.

"To the Mortal World?"

The Jade Emperor was startled: "What did he go there for?"

"It seems the Osmanthus cakes from the Heavenly Palace didn't suit his palate, so he's gone back to Huaguo Mountain to find something to eat."

Gold Star Taibai answered, relaying what he had learned from the two officials of Virtue Palace.

"For food?"

The Jade Emperor eased up but also found it amusing.

It was unexpected that Sun Wukong would be so picky about his food.

"Then let's wait until tomorrow night."

The Jade Emperor stroked his beard and said, "Tomorrow night, I'll pick a few Flat Peaches that he loves to eat and invite him to play chess with me."

Since he is a monkey, surely he would like peaches.

"By your command."

Gold Star Taibai bowed and stepped out.
