Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
The startled performer fled in panic, crashing into the makeshift stage.
The platform collapsed toward the crowd, about to fall right onto Yuan Baolin. Gu Changqing strode forward, pulled Yuan Baolin into his arms, and used his qinggong to carry her out of harm’s way.
“Elder sister!” Yuan Tong rushed to help her sister as well, but before she could reach her, a second stage came tumbling down and she fell to the ground.
Gu Chengfeng’s brows knit together.
He stepped forward and kicked the falling platform aside.
He stood before Yuan Tong like a hero from legend, shielding her from danger.
Yuan Tong, still shaken, stared at his back, her heart suddenly pounding wildly.
Gu Changqing set Yuan Baolin down at a safe spot by the street. “Wait for me here.”
Then he returned to the scene.
The two brothers, one rescuing people, the other putting out the fire, had the chaos nearly under control by the time the city guards arrived.
Yuan Tong was still badly frightened, so Gu Changqing and Yuan Baolin escorted her home first, while Gu Chengfeng stayed behind to assist with the investigation.
Inside the carriage, Yuan Tong leaned weakly against her sister’s shoulder, her face pale as paper; she was clearly still shaken.
Between the two sisters, their temperaments were quite distinct. Yuan Tong looked fierce and fiery on the outside, but in truth she was timid; Yuan Baolin, who always appeared calm and gentle, possessed a steadiness and composure far beyond most people.
Yuan Baolin wrapped an arm around her sister’s shoulders to comfort her. “When we get back, I’ll tell Mother. You can sleep with her for the next two nights.”
“That’ll make Father mad at me again.” Yuan Tong muttered. If she went to sleep with her mother, that meant her father would have to spend the night in the study.
Yuan Baolin couldn’t help but laugh. “Aren’t you the one who can’t sleep because you’re scared?”
“Who said I’m scared?” Yuan Tong huffed, though her voice lacked conviction. Then, after a pause, she hesitated and said, “Elder sister… there’s something I want to ask you.”
“Go on.” Yuan Baolin replied.
Yuan Tong’s eyes flickered. “Brother-in-law’s younger brother… isn’t it about time he get married too? He’s not that young anymore. I wonder what kind of girl he’ll marry, whether she’ll be easy to get along with. You’ll have to deal with her as your sister-in-law in the future after all.”
Yuan Baolin smiled faintly. “You’re that concerned about me?”
“Of course.” Yuan Tong said matter-of-factly. “You’re my elder sister.”
……
When they returned from the Yuan Family home and entered their room, Yuan Baolin immediately brought up Gu Chengfeng’s matter. “Has there been any talk about Chengfeng’s marriage?”
Gu Chengfeng wasn’t young anymore. If not for the fact that his elder brother hadn’t yet married until recently, both he and Gu Chenglin would have been urged into marriage long ago.
Now that Gu Changqing was married, it was indeed time to start discussing Gu Chengfeng’s future.
Gu Changqing said, “I’ll ask Mother about it another day.”
Yuan Baolin continued, “What I mean is… does he have someone he likes?”
“Someone he likes?” Gu Changqing frowned slightly. “I’ll ask him.”
That night, Gu Chengfeng returned from a successful job, feeling pleased with himself.
As soon as he entered his room, he nearly jumped out of his skin.
His elder brother was sitting there like a stone deity waiting in the dark.
“Elder brother! What are you doing here! It’s so late, why aren’t you with sister-in-law? What are you doing in my room?”
“I have something to ask you.” Gu Changqing said flatly.
Could it be… he had been caught red-handed about his thief activities again?
Impossible, he had been extra cautious this time.
Suppressing his doubts, Gu Chengfeng walked over calmly and smiled. “Elder brother, what’s so urgent that you had to ask me in the middle of the night?”
“It’s not urgent. Your sister-in-law wanted to know, so I came.”
You care about sister-in-law that much?
Brother, do you even realize it yourself?
Gu Chengfeng chuckled. “Elder brother, sister-in-law says she wants to know, and you really come running? Are you sure you two are only pretending to be married?”
Gu Changqing’s expression darkened instantly.
Realizing he had slipped up, Gu Chengfeng hurriedly slapped a hand over his mouth.
“How do you know?” Gu Changqing asked coldly.
Having kicked an iron wall, Gu Chengfeng braced himself and stammered, “I… I just… accidentally… saw the agreement in your study…”
Gu Changqing looked at him suspiciously. “I hid it that well…”
Gu Chengfeng muttered under his breath, “Well, I am the great thief Fei Shuang… no matter how well you hide something, I can still find it…”
Feeling his brother’s deathly glare, he straightened up at once and said solemnly, “But that’s not the point! The point is, I’ll never tell anyone. I’ll take it to my grave!”
The deed was done. Gu Changqing couldn’t exactly erase his memory, so he could only threaten him instead. “If you so much as breathe a word of it, I’ll break your legs.”
Gu Chengfeng pouted.
“Thanks to you, I almost forgot why I came.” Gu Changqing said, pressing a hand to his forehead in mild frustration. “Your sister-in-law wants to know if you have someone you like.”
Gu Chengfeng sat down in the chair beside him. “What for? Sister-in-law’s planning to arrange a match for me?”
“You could say that. If you have no objection——”
“I object!” Gu Chengfeng interrupted him at once.
Gu Changqing gave him a baffled look. “Why?”
For once, Gu Chengfeng’s eyes were filled with rare seriousness. “Elder brother, I’ve always listened to you, and to Grandfather, on everything else. But when it comes to this… I want to make my own choice.”
Gu Changqing was momentarily taken aback.
His gaze fell on his brother’s earnest face as he said. “So you already have someone in mind? Whose daughter is she? Tell me, and the Marquis Estate will go propose on your behalf. No matter her family background, as long as you like her, neither Grandfather nor I will object.”
Gu Chengfeng lowered his eyes and said softly, “Elder brother, there is someone I like, but this affection… can never be spoken aloud for the rest of my life.”
“You…” Gu Changqing was taken aback.
His younger brother had someone in his heart?
As his elder brother, how had he not noticed at all?
Mostly because he had never seen Chengfeng entangled with any woman.
He never even heard a whisper of such a thing.
“Who is she? Which family does she belong to? Does she not like you, or is she already promised to someone else?” Gu Changqing asked.
“Brother, please don’t ask anymore.” Gu Chengfeng lifted his head and forced a casual smile. “Anyway, I’m not the one who needs to inherit the family estate. As for my marriage… just let it be. Grandfather wants great-grandchildren and he’s got you, Chenglin, Gu Yan, and Xiaobao. There are plenty of heirs to carry on the family line. Just spare me from it.”
Let him spend the rest of his life quietly protecting the girl in his heart.

Author’s note: The eldest and second brothers’ stories are almost complete. As for Little Fengfeng, he has no love interest. Not every character needs to have a CP.

PLEASE CHECK OUT OUR NEW PROJECT:
Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
